Renewed learning spaces - design and construct learning environments that promote a shift toward flexible learning.

St Augustine’s College, located in Brookvale on the Northern Beaches of Sydney has recently completed construction of a two-phase redevelopment. Designed by architects fjmtstudio and constructed by local builder Novati Constructions, the College has unveiled innovative learning spaces that are flexible, varied and connected to meet the current and emerging teaching and learning needs for students.

The first stage of the College’s long term master plan saw the transformation of the existing Brimson Centre. Once home to the school library and IT facilities the centre is now a modern learning space specifically designed for Technology and Applied Studies (TAS).

Stage Two involved the redevelopment and extension of two existing buildings in the Goold and Lecceto wings. This area is now a large hub for general and specialist teaching spaces along with an exceptional vertically integrated library spanning across three levels.

A feature of the design is the expansive glass facade. Novati Constructions awarded the Stage Two glazing package to a local fabricator who installed the high performing CoolRay™ 70 insulated glass units that provide optimum internal lighting with the added benefits of low SHGC and U Values.

The internal glass partitions required an acoustic solution, which is why Silencia™ was the ideal product as it is designed to reduce noise levels transmitted through the glazing.

The Result

The state of the art redevelopment has added 21 general learning classrooms, music rooms, specialist art studios, indoor/outdoor senior study areas, an amphitheatre, auditorium, open flexible library spaces and an outdoor barbeque terrace.

The use of glass is aesthically pleasing and an exemplary case of using high performing glass to deliver outstanding levels of comfort for the occupants and performance that contributes to the buildings overall energy efficiency.
