Wednesday, November 30, 2016

Keeping your home clean is important to mental health and general wellbeing. But even the savviest cleaners can stumble when they come up against the task of cleaning the almighty window. With grubby fingerprints, residue build up and the old faithful rain marks – how do you get your glass sparkling like new?

The good news is glass is pretty forgiving – when you give it the right care and use the right solution, you can remove stains and avoid streaks. You’ll also be happy to know it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg and you don’t need to use chemical-based cleaners to get the job done. In fact, did you know, you can clean your windows with items most of us have stored in our kitchen cupboards or lying around the house?

You don’t need to spend money on window cleaners with these simple and effective solutions. Here’s 5 great ways to clean your windows with common house-hold items you’re sure to have lying around your abode.

Be sure to check our cleaning instructions for specific guidance on cleaning specialised products like Low e glass.

1/ Vinegar

Vinegar removes films from glass surfaces and leaves it free of streaks and smudges. To make a general window cleaner, simply mix distilled white vinegar with equal parts water. To make it easy to apply, pour into a spray bottle and Bob’s your uncle.

2/ Baking Soda

Not just great for baking cakes! This common kitchen staple is a non-abrasive cleaner that is great at lifting stubborn stains like shower scum. To get started, try using a half-cup of baking soda, then add water as needed to make a thick paste. Using a rag or newspaper, scrub the glass and rinse it with vinegar.

3/ Soapy Water

Everyone has something soapy floating around their home. Simply mix regular soap with lukewarm water and voilà you have a cleaning solution that will work wonders.

4/ Lemon Juice

Lemons are such a wonderful and natural cleaning source, perfect for removing stains. And as an added bonus they leave a lovely citrus scent behind when you are finished. Make your windows and mirrors sparkle with a simple combination of lemon juice and water – apply to your glass with a spray bottle and wipe off the residue with a cloth or newspaper.

5/ Newspaper

Most of us have newspapers piling up around the house. Rather than throwing them away, why not use them to clean your windows? The paper and ink act as a light abrasive to give you really clean windows. Simply make a solution from one of your choices above, put into a spray bottle and wipe until the surface is clean and free from streaks. No matter which method you choose to clean your windows, it’s a good idea to wash your glass in an alternating up and down, and right to left motion. Try to avoid circular motion as that can cause streaks.

Once you are finished, sit back and enjoy the view. Happy cleaning!
